Building Scalable Mobile Apps for African Markets

By Deems Lab·March 22, 2026·6 min read

Africa is the world's fastest-growing mobile market. With over 600 million smartphone users and adoption accelerating every year, mobile applications are the primary way most Africans interact with software. But building for this market requires a fundamentally different approach than building for Western audiences.

Designing for Low Bandwidth

A significant portion of African internet users still operate on 2G and 3G networks, particularly in tier-2 and tier-3 cities. Performant apps must be lean: optimised images, lazy loading, aggressive caching, and meaningful offline states. An app that requires a stable 4G connection to function will alienate a huge portion of potential users.

Progressive Web Apps vs. Native

The choice between a Progressive Web App (PWA) and a fully native app is a strategic one. PWAs can be installed without an app store, reducing friction and storage concerns on lower-end devices. Native apps offer richer device integration — camera, biometrics, push notifications — but come with higher development costs. We help clients make this decision based on their target user profile and distribution strategy.

Payment Integration

Mobile money is dominant in many African markets — M-Pesa, Opay, Flutterwave, and Paystack are the rails that power digital commerce. Integrating these payment methods is not optional; it is table stakes. Designing for mobile-first payment flows means minimising steps, supporting USSD fallbacks, and building trust through clear transaction feedback.

Testing on Real Devices

Emulators only go so far. Testing on actual mid-range Android devices — Tecno, Infinix, Itel — reveals performance issues that never show up on a developer's MacBook. We maintain a device farm that mirrors the real distribution of hardware in our target markets.

Building for Africa is not about building less. It is about building smarter, with empathy for the actual conditions your users navigate every day.
